Known issues

• DPF regeneration failures and blockages, especially in low-mileage/stop-start driving; costs €800–1,500 to clean or replace
• Diesel injector carbon fouling and stiction on TDI engines; symptoms include rough idle, poor cold start, and white smoke; injector replacement €400–700 per unit
• EGR valve carbon buildup causing loss of power and increased emissions; common from 60k miles onward
• Turbocharger bearing wear and oil starvation; failure usually after 80k miles if oil changes are delayed
• Fuel pump/sender unit electrical faults; can cause intermittent no-start or fuel gauge malfunction
• DSG7 gearbox shudder on low-speed manoeuvres, particularly noticeable in 1st–2nd gear transitions (affects some 2018 models with automatic)

Good for

• Excellent real-world fuel economy (40–50 mpg) on mixed driving with proper DPF maintenance
• Strong mid-range torque and refinement; pleasant motorway cruiser
• Well-built interior and intuitive infotainment; good long-term reliability of core mechanical structure (engine block, gearbox internals) when serviced regularly
• Cheap spare parts and strong parts availability across Irish suppliers
