Known issues

• DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration issues and premature clogging, especially on short-journey drivers; can cost €800–€1,500 to clear or replace
• Diesel injector failure and carbon build-up on common-rail injectors; symptoms include rough idle, loss of power, and white smoke
• EGR valve problems leading to poor emission control, fault codes, and potential limp-mode
• Gearbox (automatic A6, ZF or Aisin) shuddering or hesitation in low-speed manoeuvres; software updates sometimes help but hardware failure is possible
• Timing chain tensioner rattle on cold start, especially if oil changes are infrequent; can lead to chain slack and catastrophic failure if ignored
• Electrical gremlins with comfort modules, instrument cluster flickering, and CAN bus communication faults causing multiple warning lights

Good for

• Fuel economy (45–55 MPG real-world on mixed driving if DPF is healthy and not clogged)
• Spacious interior and decent boot capacity for family use
• Comfortable motorway cruising with reasonable refinement at speed
• Depreciation already bottomed out, so residual value is stable for a 2017 model
