Known issues

• DPF clogging and regeneration failure, especially if predominantly driven in stop-start urban traffic
• EGR valve carbon build-up causing rough idle, hesitation, and potential limp mode activation
• Turbocharger wastegate rattle and premature turbo failure (typically 80k–120k miles)
• Injector carbon deposits and occasional injector failure on early fuel-injection revisions
• PowerShift automatic gearbox shudder on low-speed manoeuvres and occasional jerky transitions
• Coolant leak from water pump housing gasket, particularly after 100k km

Good for

• Spacious, flexible seven-seat interior with comfortable ride quality for family long-distance trips
• Decent fuel economy when DPF and engine are functioning optimally (45–48 mpg realistic on mixed driving)
• Relatively robust chassis and suspension compared to earlier S-Max generations
• Strong towing capacity (2.0 TDCi rated up to 2,000 kg braked) for caravans and trailers
