Known issues

• DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration issues requiring forced regens or filter cleaning, especially on cars with low mileage usage
• EGR valve carbon buildup leading to rough idle or limp mode, more common in 80,000+ mile examples
• Fuel injector stiction causing cold-start difficulty or rough running; affects some 1.6 TDI units
• DSG 7-speed gearbox: occasional judder or hesitation on low-speed manoeuvres, particularly in stop-start traffic
• Water in diesel fuel tank causing corrosion; poor fuel quality incidents reported with some UK/Irish filling stations
• Turbocharger bearing wear leading to blue smoke on acceleration or turbo failure by 100,000+ miles if servicing neglected

Good for

• Fuel economy: achieves 45–50 mpg in mixed driving with proper DPF maintenance and highway use
• Spacious, practical interior with excellent boot space and comfortable seating for long journeys
• Build quality and simplicity of mechanical design; relatively low parts costs and good availability from independent suppliers
• Company car appeal: low CO₂ emissions and tax-friendly diesel credentials (pre-2018 perception)
