Known issues

• DPF (diesel particulate filter) clogging and regeneration failures, particularly on low-mileage urban driving; limp mode and warning lights common
• Diesel injector carbon buildup and occasional injector failure, leading to rough idle and starting issues
• EGR valve sticking or failure, causing rough running and increased emissions
• Timing chain stretch and rattle on cold starts, especially in higher-mileage examples
• Power steering fluid leaks from the steering rack gasket; leaks can be slow but persistent
• Brake dust accumulation on alloy wheels; corrosion of wheel bolts and studs over time

Good for

• Fuel economy: real-world 45–50 mpg on mixed driving with a well-maintained DPF
• Spacious interior and boot for a compact family hatchback; good practicality
• Low CO₂ emissions if emissions systems are functioning; tax-friendly in that era
• Robust diesel engine (1.6 or 1.7 CDTi) capable of 150k–200k miles with proper servicing
