Known issues

• DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration issues and blockages, particularly on low-mileage / stop-start driving, leading to limp mode and expensive cleaning or replacement (€800–€1,500)
• Xtronic CVT transmission hesitation, judder, and loss of drive on acceleration or low-speed manoeuvres; some failures require full transmission replacement
• Diesel engine carbon build-up and injector fouling, especially on short journeys, causing rough idle, starting difficulty, and increased emissions
• EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve sticking and failure, resulting in poor idle, reduced power, and fault codes
• Timing chain rattle and wear on 1.6 dCi engine, audible on cold start; can lead to premature chain/tensioner replacement
• Electrical gremlins including dashboard warning light failures (check engine, oil pressure) and occasional loss of radio/instrument cluster display

Good for

• Spacious, practical 7-seat interior with good boot flexibility for families and cargo hauling
• Reasonable fuel economy (40–48 mpg real-world) on longer journeys if DPF is healthy and driving style is steady
• Solid build quality and rugged exterior design; comfortable ride for everyday commuting
• Strong resale market in Ireland/UK; parts availability and independent repair shops familiar with common X-Trail issues
