Known issues

• Turbocharger failure or lag, often caused by carbon build-up and inadequate oil changes — costly replacement €800–€1,200
• DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) blockages requiring forced regeneration or cleaning, particularly on low-mileage or urban-driven examples
• Timing chain tensioner wear leading to rattling on cold starts; eventual chain stretching can cause timing issues
• AdBlue system faults (sensor errors, heater failures) causing limp mode and reduced performance
• Oil sludge accumulation in 1.6 TDCi engine if service intervals extended, compromising turbo longevity
• Electrical gremlins with the MINI Connected infotainment system and occasional CAN bus faults

Good for

• Genuine fuel economy (45–55 mpg real-world if driven sensibly and DPF healthy)
• Good torque delivery for a small diesel, making it reasonably nippy for urban/commute duties
• Practical interior space and boot volume for the Countryman platform
• Lower VED cost than petrol equivalent and modest CO₂ emissions
