Known issues

• DPF clogging and regeneration issues, especially on low-mileage/urban-driven examples; can lead to limp-mode and expensive cleaning or replacement (€800–1,500)
• Turbocharger reliability concerns; wastegate rattle, turbo bearing wear, and occasional complete failure around 80,000–120,000 miles
• EGR valve faults causing rough idle, high emissions, and check engine light; common on diesel engines of this era
• Electrical gremlins: windows, door locks, and infotainment glitches; MINI's electrical architecture is fragile
• Fuel injector deposits and carbon build-up on direct injection engines reducing efficiency and drivability
• Transmission judder on low-speed manoeuvres (especially with the 6-speed manual); clutch engagement issues

Good for

• Reasonable fuel economy (45–52 mpg real-world, depending on driving) compared to petrol rivals
• Practical interior space and surprisingly decent boot for the segment
• Fun, involving driving dynamics typical of MINI; sharp steering and nimble handling
• Lower road tax than petrol equivalent (€180–220 annual VED if registered pre-2021)
