Known issues

• N47/N47S diesel engine timing chain tensioner failure (premature wear), leading to rattling and potential engine damage if not addressed
• DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration issues and premature clogging, especially on cars doing short urban journeys
• Fuel injector carbon buildup and intermittent misfires on direct injection diesel engines
• Electrical gremlins: dashboard warning lights (check engine, glow plug), parasitic battery drain, and iDrive system failures
• High-pressure fuel pump seal leaks, resulting in fuel odour and potential fuel starvation
• Cooling system corrosion and thermostat housing cracks, particularly on earlier 2016 examples

Good for

• Genuine highway fuel economy (45–50 mpg) if regularly driven on longer routes
• Smooth, refined diesel power delivery and strong mid-range torque
• Premium interior quality and robust chassis dynamics for the class
• Lower road tax (€170/year) compared to petrol 3 Series of the same age
