Known issues

• Timing chain rattle/stretch on N20 and N26 petrol engines, particularly under cold start or load—can lead to chain failure if not addressed early
• Electrical faults including iDrive system freezing, window regulators failing, and dashboard warning light false positives
• Turbocharger carbon build-up and occasional boost pressure sensor faults on turbocharged variants (228i)
• Water pump failure around 60,000–90,000 miles; plastic impeller design prone to premature wear
• DSG gearbox (218i DCT) exhibits judder or hesitation during low-speed city driving and occasional gearbox software issues
• High-pressure fuel pump reliability concerns on some units; fuel injector carbon deposits on direct-injection engines
