Known issues

• B47 diesel engine: injector carbon fouling and difficulty starting in cold weather, especially on poor-quality fuel
• Turbocharger wastegate actuator failure leading to reduced boost and limp mode
• DPF regeneration problems and premature clogging, often triggered by short urban journeys; can require expensive forced regeneration
• ZF 8-speed automatic transmission: harsh downshifts, delayed engagement on cold starts, and occasional limp-home mode without fault codes
• EGR valve carbon accumulation and potential failure; costly to access and clean/replace
• 12V battery discharge and charging issues; battery management system faults common, especially in winter

Good for

• Motorway cruising efficiency—strong mid-range torque and quiet at sustained speeds; real-world combined economy 45–50 mpg achievable on A-roads
• Premium cabin materials and intuitive infotainment (iDrive 7.0) with good ergonomics
• Agile handling and tight build quality typical of BMW; responsive steering and composed cornering
• Low CO₂ emissions and tax-efficient in 2020 (post-WLTP, still rated ~120 g/km)
