Known issues

• Carbon buildup on direct-injection valves causing rough idle, hesitation, and reduced performance—requires walnut-shell blasting (€600–€900)
• DSG gearbox shuddering or hesitation on low-speed manoeuvres, particularly in traffic; software updates sometimes help but may require mechatronic rebuild (€2,500+)
• Electrical gremlins: dashboard warning lights, infotainment failures, and parasitic battery drain
• Turbocharger carbon tracking and boost hose splits; high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) can develop internal wear
• Timing chain rattle on cold start—appears to be design tolerance issue on EA888 Gen3 engine; does not always require replacement
• Water pump failure between 60,000–100,000 miles; thermostat housing plastic cracks

Good for

• Responsive turbocharged performance and sharp handling for a front-wheel-drive hot hatch
• Strong residual parts availability and established tuning/modification community
• Comfortable daily driver with good interior quality and infotainment (when functioning)
• Relatively fuel-efficient for a 310 PS petrol (27–32 mpg real-world if engine is clean)
