Known issues

• DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration problems and blockages, especially on short-journey vehicles—can lead to reduced power mode and costly cleaning/replacement (€800–€1,500)
• EGR valve failure or carbon buildup causing rough idle, poor starting, and increased emissions on cold starts
• Fuel injector issues (sticking or leaking), particularly around 80,000–120,000 km, causing rough running and increased fuel consumption
• Timing chain tensioner rattle on cold starts, especially in winter—may be early warning of pending chain wear
• DSG automatic gearbox (7-speed) judder or hesitation during low-speed acceleration or creeping in traffic
• High-pressure fuel pump failure, causing loss of power or no-start conditions

Good for

• Excellent real-world fuel economy (45–55 mpg) and low CO₂ emissions for tax/insurance purposes
• Refined, quiet diesel engine with adequate torque for motorway cruising and towing
• Sharp handling and premium interior quality typical of Audi's A3 segment
• Strong residual value relative to petrol equivalents, especially in Ireland where diesel bias has persisted
